[4 panel comic titles ‘if god could see us now’ of god on a cloud in various states of frustration: “Are you guys seriously killing people in my name?!” “That is literally the FIRE thing I told you not to do. THE FIRST THING!” “And why are you still hating on gay people?” “I wouldn’t make them that way if I thought it was wrong!” “Just be kind to each other, people; it’s not that hard!” “Oh because the Bible says so?” “Do you realize how old that book is?” “You don’t think some things may have changed a bit since it was written?” “FORGET IT!” “You guys are hopeless.” “I’m gonna go create a planet of kittens to keep myself from flood everything.”]

It’s gotta be exasperating being God sometimes. I mean, I wouldn’t want to deal with us.

Fabulous Barbarians of the Day: Nick Espinosa, of Gingrich glitterbomb fame, showed up at Marcus and Michele Bachmann’s controversial Christian clinic with “a horde of gay barbarians” to offer the owners some unsolicited redecoration assistance.
From the group’s press release:

Marcus Bachmann, who conducts “reparative therapy” at the clinic intended to convert homosexuals, has said that gays are “barbarians who need to be disciplined.” The horde requested to speak directly with Bachmann and experience some “discipline” for themselves.
When Marcus was no where to be found, the barbarians glittered the empty waiting room and reception area while chanting, “You can’t pray away the gay — baby, I was born this way!”

Of course, those who oppose same-sex marriage in New York State and elsewhere are not saying they support violence against LGBTQ people. Nevertheless, the same basic proposition lies at the root of both: the notion that you are somehow a different — lesser — type of human being if you are not, or are not seen to be, straight, and that society is justified in rejecting you.

For too many people it is only a short leap from seeing homosexuality as offensive to justifying physical harm. In this way, for example, the ban on inter-racial marriage in this country coexisted with societal acceptance of violence against people of color. Many times, inter-racial couples suffered violenceprecisely because they dared to break the ban.

Newsweek’s first cover on gay rights, featuring a fiery Anita Bryant, documented how the Florida Citrus Commission spokeswoman (and former Miss Oklahoma) was mobilizing what was described as a “somewhat bizarre but deadly serious battle over gay rights.”
Bryant, of course, would later take a banana cream pie in the face. (“Well at least it’s a fruit pie,” she exclaimed.)
And thirty-four years to the month later, New York would become the sixth and largest state to legalize gay marriage.
